1966 GT350H SFM6S2028 - Advanced project
|
'66 Hertz #2028 was originally a black/gold GT350H automatic that did rental duty in San Francisco. It stayed in California until 1978 and has been off the road since at least then. I have copies of some years' CA registrations as well as other original documents listing several California owners. It was bought by Lee Wilmot of Georgia in 1978 - Lee was a long time Shelby enthusiast in that area. I bought it as a project car from Lee in April of 1987 and sold it to a local buyer. He initiated the restoration soon afterward, and it has been his on again/off again project over the past 25 years.
Mileage was and still is 68,245.The original Shelby tag is intact and the Shelby VIN is clearly stamped into the right apron. The 6R09K numbers are intact.
According to Lee Wilmot, 2028 was originally a steel hood car. It now has a repro all fiberglass hood installed by the owner. The wheel openings on the rear quarters had been enlarged for 1970's wide rear tires, so the car now has full NOS Ford quarters on both sides with repro outer wheel houses. The left front floor was partially repaired; the body metal is otherwise original. Being a California car for all of its road life, it has very clean metal.
The car was painted in the 1990's by a local fellow who still does work for me. The finish is very high quality, with good subsurface prep resulting in smooth, straight panels and good gloss. As shown in the photos, the color change is complete to all hidden areas. Panel fit is excellent. Exterior trim is all Ford NOS. The engine compartment and underneath were blasted clean and painted black. All glass has been installed.
The interior is completely restored. A new headliner is already in place, along with most weatherstrip, but the rest of the interior is not yet installed. There is a new dash pad and instrument bezel, seats have been reupholstered and all interior panels are painted and ready for assembly with all new hardware. There is a new carpet set and door panels/arm rest assemblies. The original steering wheel and center cap are intact, along with correct style seat belts front and rear, and proper Cobra tach. The heater is rebuilt with a new core and there is a correct AM radio.
When I got it, #2028 was missing its engine and transmission but still has its original correctly dated 9 inch diff with 3:50 ratio. My 1978 buyer acquired a 289 Hipo engine and original "C" servo HiPo C4 automatic for it out of another Shelby. The Cobra valve covers presently on the engine are open letter but being a late car, it should have painted style covers and it will come with those instead. There is also a repro aluminum Cobra "T" oil pan included, and large diameter pulley alternator and correct dual point centrifugal advance distributor. The buyer can also have a choice between an Autolite 4100 or Holley 715 carb.
The engine itself is a service block Hipo with 6G casting date (July '66), no assembly date stamp and no VIN stamp. The car was completed at Shelby in 3/66 so the engine is too late to be correct. Heads are correct "21" code. All body fuel and brake lines are new and installed, with correct master cylinder and proportioning valve. I will include a complete new exhaust system if you opt for the engine and transmission.
Shocks are Konis with '70's dates, Any remaining trim not already on the car is included and is Ford NOS, including the grille and radio antenna. The wheels are D1OZ 14x7 service Magnums that many early cars were restored with in the 1970-90's.The tires are new condition but are rather aged by now.
The trunk hardware (jack, handle, etc) is included, along with an NOS mat.
The car without engine and transmission is $89,500. I will include the engine, with all Shelby unique parts and choice of either correct Hipo C4 automatic or a 4 speed setup, including a brand new NOS T-10 trans, for an additional $10,000.
The car is located in my showroom and can be seen by appointment.
