1970 Boss 302 Grabber Orange - VIN  0T02G135353

Description prepared by Bill Collins on January 12, 2007

Factory Grabber Orange exterior with black deluxe interior. 58,000 actual miles.

This Boss was sold new at Miller-McVeigh Ford in State College, PA. This is about 100 miles northwest of my location in Harrisburg. The original dash tag and build or "body buck" tags are intact. The door warranty sticker may be a replacement. The car has been titled in Georgia and Massachusetts before returning to Pennsylvania in 2001. It is presently on a PA title. I have full history and copies of all titles. I have owned this car twice before, receiving it as a trade in on Shelbys. So, I am quite familiar with it. The last owner was Rob Ream, who is the brother of Randy Ream, noted Boss 302 guru who runs the Boss registry. Need I say more about pedigree? Randy also bought his '69 Boss 302 from me in 1994.

Factory options include fold down seat, clock, console, decor group (deluxe interior), convenience group, tach dash, rear spoiler, Magnum wheels and 3:91 locking optional axle ratio. Factory radio delete and still that way, with the original woodgrain blankout panel still in place.  Being a 3:91 equipped car, this Boss did originally have an external oil cooler, which is intact. However, the openings in the radiator support are not original. The holes are incorrectly shaped and the lower one is not in the correct location and lacks the factory finished lip. I suspect that the radiator support may have been changed.

A Shelby style export brace replaces the stock firewall to shock tower brackets. The shaker and rear window louvres were owner added. The jury is out on the trunk battery; it is not mentioned in any of the paperwork but the tray is an OEM Ford setup identical to that used on the Boss 429. And the spare tire has been relocated to the opposite side of the trunk from its normal position, which was done on trunk battery cars. So, if it was converted, it is a very nice job! The factory equipment is confirmed by a Marti Report, the second copy window sticker (commonly called the "Eminger Invoice") and build sheet. All of these items are still on the car.

The engine is the original to the car with matching VIN on the block. It was rebuilt in 2005. I have receipts; a LOT of money (almost $4000) was spent, internals are all new and mostly upgraded from OEM, Rob wanted to be able to hammer it without problems. There are fewer than 500 miles on it since. He also installed a new clutch setup. The carb is replacement Holley double pumper. The original carb may be available. The distributor, emission system, and rev limiter are correct. The shaker unit is a correct factory original and has the snorkel and heat shield. The original cast iron exhaust manifolds connect into a Flowmaster system that is OEM style.

The trans is the original RUG-AV wide ratio 4 speed (unusual for a 3:91 rear car). I am informed that there may also be a VIN on the trans, but I have not confirmed this. The reverse lockout rod and speedometer adapter are intact on the trans (required w/ 3:91 rear). The rear is the correct "N" case with the original 3:91 locking differential. My info is that the car was raced while in Georgia. and a few race tricks remain in evidence. The camber adjusting cams for the lower control arms are welded in place, and there is some reinforcing welding around the perimeters of the inner shock tower plates (where the upper control arms fasten).

The body is very solid with original floors. The underneath is clean and painted black with some detailing. This was done some time ago so there is now some patina to it; I have photos if you would like to see this. There is no evidence of rust or rust repair anywhere. The quarters were also reportedly flared as part of the Georgia race history. They were later returned to OEM style; the replacement area is below the beltline. As I said, I believe the radiator support may have been replaced, but I do not know the reason for this. I found no evidence of serious accident damage, the frame rails and aprons have no buckles or straightened areas. The support may have been modified for larger radiator, coolers, etc for racing and then returned to stock. The front fenders are original with the factory modification to the inner lip to clear the F60 tires.

The exterior was repainted in 2003 and the job is very good; the finish has nice smoothness and gloss. The car was disassembled for this and the paint is very even everywhere, including hidden areas like the inner front headlights/valence, door jambs and trunk interior.

The interior is completely original except for the carpet. Everything is in very good condition; no cracks or tears. There is one flaw on the driver's seatback; the outer bolster has a gouge in it but it is not split. This is probably from the action of people getting in and out over the years.

The trunk mat is the original to the car. The factory prop rod used on spoiler cars is intact under the deck lid. The correct blowup spare is fitted, with original jack and inflator bottle.

One photo shows the build tag - here are the code breakdowns from it:

358 -  Rotation number (this vehicle's place on the assembly line for that particular build)
12 -  Welding bay number
21L -  Actual build date (may vary from scheduled dates shown on door tags) November 21, 1969
63B -  Fastback body style with deluxe interior
EA  -  Interior trim code - black comfortweave deluxe
OT  G135353     - Vehicle identification number
U GRAB ORNG - Exterior color Grabber Orange - color code U
LP - Special radio operation (delete)
PB - Power brakes
BO - Boss 302
DE - Dual exhaust
CL - Courtesy lights
CG - Convenience group
RS -  Rear spoiler
RM - Remote mirror
CT  - Collapsible (spare) tire

These codes are for equipment or options requiring a body operation to install, hence the name "body build" or "buck" tag. Thus, it does not recite all options on a particular car. For instance, the collapsible spare required a special bracket be welded to the trunk floor to hold the inflator canister. The rear spoiler required holes in the deck lid and quarter end cap (for the reinforcing rod)

This Boss 302 runs and drives great! Very smooth and powerful, steers and stops straight, no handling or performance issues. Everything is well set up and sorted out. No surprises! .

Price: $79,500
